Instagram announced yesterday that they will slowly begin rolling out sponsored advertising in the UK over the coming weeks, with Canada and Australia to follow later this year. Starting with just a few businesses that are already rocking Instagram, they assure us that the ads will be creative and engaging.
Sponsored ads will appear in the News Feed like a normal post from someone that you follow. However they will mark sponsored ad posts with this icon to ensure transparency of placement.
They will only show ads from businesses that are interesting to us, based on information and activity on Instagram & Facebook. And we can provide feedback about less interesting ads by clicking the – effectively controlling what we do, and don’t want to see. This feedback will then help them show more interesting ads over time.
So from a personal perspective their approach appears to be fairly unobtrusive. Advertising on Instagram was inevitable but it looks like they are acting in the spirit of the Instagram community as they roll out this new initiative.
For now, Sponsored Advertising is being trailed with a select few. As and when information becomes available, I'll bring you updates for how businesses can get on board and how it will change the advertising landscape moving forward.
Until then, I’m just excited to see which Australian businesses I’ll see pop up on my feed in the near future.
