So last night, Blog Society held their first twitter-chat. [twitter-chat def ~ chat on twitter where people use an assigned #hashtag to join a stream of tweets on a certain topic/event] As it began I started following along, with no plans of joining in. I have only recently created my work twitter account and had put it in my ‘to-do’ basket. I literally had the freshest account you could stumble across - 0 tweets, 0 followers, 0 followings.
I couldn’t possibly join in, I hadn’t set up my account, written a single tweet or made any effort to find or follow anyone. I was dormant. I felt that I needed to have an established account before I could participate in a twitter chat, or twitter in general for that matter.
As a social media coach, I felt embarrassed that I had no twitter presence. ZERO. How could I NOT be on twitter yet?
Well starting a business is hard. Harder than I ever expected. And Twitter [from previous experience] is a very time consuming platform. Fast and furious. My thoughts, and advice to my clients, has always been “if you don’t have 24/7 to invest in Twitter, don’t bother”.
I help beginners, newbies to social media, find their online voice and tribe to grow their business. Instagram is the strongest platform for businesses to share their story, products and services visually – so naturally it has been my focus point with my client training to date.
Social media can be overwhelming at the best of times, so I suggest new users start with 1 platform and get comfortable with it… branching out when they are ready.
Well, last nights Blog Society Twitter chat turned into my “ready” [aka not ready but the time is now], moment. I jumped straight in… thankfully it was into an incredibly supportive group of online movers & shakers. We shared insights into the struggles we face while trying to build our empire… which ironically included managing social media as a part of our business. It really ignited my love for twitter again. How you can connect in conversation with people from all over the world, on a topic of interest, in real time. How you can find like-minded people and groups, potential collaborators, advocators or even just peer support. How you can share without having to create a perfect accompanying image.
Taking my own advice was hard. Twitter was scary. Even for me and I strategise and create content for social media all day, every day. Was I ready to devote even MORE time to social media? Fundamentally the strategy is the same; the content is the same; its just .. well Twitter is on speed. But, hey, if you don’t get on the ride, you’ll never be re-tweeted by Lisa Messenger [this happened last night :o].
So I declare my current stats: 7 tweets, 9 followers, 19 followings, as well as my dedication to share my journey with you. As I get my head back around this Twitter game I'm going to show you how to go from Zero to Twitter in 12 days. Starting December 1st, I’ll share a tip each day via my twitter @theartof_social + a how-to step by step blog post.
If you’re thinking about joining Twitter, or have an account that is sitting there inactive – follow along & get on the bandwagon with me!
Let's have some fun.
